The issue of whether the Earth is young or old appears in several articles on this site. Young Earth Creationists (YECs) insist that Genesis is to be taken literally, and the universe is but a few thousand years old. Old-Earth Creationists (OECs) allow for some leeway in interpretation of Genesis and accept scientific measurements of the universe being billions of years old. I've said that it seems to me that the two camps effectively disprove each other. I believe the OECs are correct in that the Earth and universe is indeed quite old. Yet I agree with YECs that is not what one would expect based on the Bible.
An extraordinarily good example of YECs and OECs disproving each other is Dr. Hugh Ross' book entitled Creation and Time: A Biblical and Scientific Perspective on the Creation-Date Controversy, and another book critical of Dr. Ross entitled Creation and Time: A Report on the Progressive Creationist Book by Hugh Ross by Mark Van Bebber and Paul S. Taylor, published by Eden Communications. These two "creation and time" books make for an interesting odd couple. One one hand, Ross does do a good job of showing that the universe is indeed quite ancient. On the other Van Bebber and Taylor do a good job of showing why Ross' attempts to rationalize an ancient universe with the Bible fail.
I have decided for the time being to not attempt to do exhaustive reviews of these books. Rather, I have relatively brief commentaries on a few key points in each book, which I believe are sufficient to reveal that neither book should be given serious consideration. As I said, they effectively disprove each other, leaving neither one standing.
